Obsession – NT LIVE

img29171202_obsession smallJude Law (The Young Pope, Closer, The Talented Mr Ripley) stars in the stage production of Obsession, broadcast live from the Barbican Theatre in London. Ivo van Hove (NT Live: A View from the Bridge, Hedda Gabler) directs this new stage adaptation of Luchino Visconti’s 1943 film. Gino is a drifter, down-at-heel and magnetically handsome. At a road side restaurant he encounters husband and wife, Giuseppe and Giovanna. Irresistibly attracted to each other, Gino and Giovanna begin a fiery affair and plot to murder her husband. But, in this chilling tale of passion and destruction, the crime only serves to tear them apart. The stage production of Obsession is produced by Barbican Theatre Productions Limited, London and Toneelgroep Amsterdam; co-commissioned by Wiener Festwochen and Les Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg; co-produced by Holland Festival and David Binder Productions; and supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The Dream/Symphonic Variations/Marguerite & Armand – Royal Ballet Live

The Dream is Ashton’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s riotous comedy in which a forest sprite plays havoc, armed with a love potion. Symphonic Variationswas Ashton’s first work after World War II, and one of the Company’s first to be performed on the huge main stage of the Royal Opera House, in 1946. With six dancers performing a series of quartets, duets, sextets and solos to Franck’s brooding Variations symphoniques, this seminal masterpiece celebrates the pure beauty of movement. Marguerite and Armand is Ashton’s beautiful and emotional retelling of a well-known story, familiar to us through Verdi’s opera La traviata. Ashton famously created this poignant ballet on Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in 1963

p panAll children, except one, grow up… Captured live at the National Theatre, a recorded performance of JM Barrie’s much-loved tale screens in cinemas this summer. When Peter Pan, leader of the Lost Boys, loses his shadow, headstrong Wendy helps him to reattach it. In return, she is invited to Neverland, where Tinker Bell the fairy, Tiger Lily and the vengeful Captain Hook await. A riot of magic, music and make-believe ensues. A delight for children and adults alike, Sally Cookson (NT Live: Jane Eyre) directs this wondrously inventive production, a co-production with Bristol Old Vic theatre.

A major work of the opera repertory, Verdi’s Otello draws on the full forces of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Royal Opera Chorus and this stellar line-up of principal singers, with exquisite duets, emotionally potent solo numbers and thrilling choruses. Particular highlights include Otello and Desdemona’s rapturous love duet and Desdemona’s poignant ‘Willow Song’. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano conducts this Italian masterpiece.

ANGELS IN AMERICA – PART ONE, MILLENNIUM APPROACHES – NT LIVE

In the midst of the AIDS crisis and a conservative Reagan administration, New Yorkers grapple with life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell. Andrew Garfield (Silence, Hacksaw Ridge) plays Prior Walter along with a cast including Denise Gough (People, Places and Things), Nathan Lane (The Producers), James McArdle (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Russell Tovey (The Pass). This new staging of Tony Kushner’s multi-award winning two-part play is directed by Olivier and Tony award winning director Marianne Elliott (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and War Horse). Part Two: Perestroika, will also be broadcast live on 27 July 2017.

Andre Rieu’s 2017 Maastricht Concert

img91568561_goodandreHe is known for his energetic and spell-binding live performances, as well as amassing over 40 million album and DVD sales worldwide, and now the world’s leading pop classical artist, André Rieu, has announced his annual Maastricht concert will once again be beamed into cinemas across the UK in celebration of his 30th year in music. André Rieu’s 2017 Maastricht Concert will screen via satellite in over 500 cinemas in the UK on Saturday 22nd July (7pm) and Sunday 23th July (3pm) including major multiplexes and many independent cinemas and arts centres. The Dutch violinist is one of the world’s highest-grossing touring artists, and every year performs a very special concert in his hometown of Maastricht to tens of thousands who travel from all over the globe to experience one of the most emotionally engulfing live music experiences possible, set against the back-drop of the equally as elegant medieval town square. The Maastricht concert features the maestro in his element, with his famous 60-piece Johann Strauss Orchestra, sopranos, tenors and very special guests. Last year, André Rieu’s Maastricht concert broke his own record for music event cinema – grossing more than £1.4million at the UK box office over one weekend, more than Take That and One Direction. Now, the Maastricht concert in 2017 will hold extra special significance, as it marks 30 years since André formed the Johann Strauss Orchestra, who have come to be as much family to him as some of the most talented musicians anyone could share the stage with. Once again, the cinema show will be hosted by Good Morning Britain Presenter, Charlotte Hawkins.

Titus is a ruler exhausted by war and loss, who relinquishes power but leaves Rome in disorder. Rape, cannibalism and severed body parts fill the moral void at the heart of this corrupt society. Shakespeare’s gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment, and, as the body count piles up, poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society. Blanche McIntyre returns to the RSC after her debut directing The Two Noble Kinsmen (2016).

In this new city state struggling to find its feet, where the gap between rich and poor is widening every day, Coriolanus must decide who he really is and where his allegiances lie. Rome Season Director, Angus Jackson, completes the Royal Shakespeare Company’s collection of Shakespeare’s Roman plays with a visceral production which sees Sope Dirisu (One Night in Miami, Donmar Warehouse, 2016) take on the title role.

Enter Sebastian, who is the spitting image of his twin sister… Christopher Luscombe, Director of the ‘glorious’ (Daily Telegraph) Love’s Labour’s Lost and Much Ado About Nothing (2014 and 2016), returns to the Royal Shakespeare Company to tackle Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, a brilliantly bittersweet account of “the whirligig of time”.
