About Us

White River Cinema is part of the regeneration of the former Alymer Square in the town centre of St Austell, and opened its doors for the first time in December 2008. The cinema was the first purpose built cinema complex to be built in Cornwall for over 70 years.

The cinema has four screens all on first floor level which can be accessed from the ground floor lift and stairs.

The cinema also has a licensed bar on its first floor for patrons to enjoy a quiet drink prior to the start of the film.

In Summer 2013 the cinema commenced live satellite transmissions of theatrical shows, concerts, opera and ballet, bringing live content to St Austell from around the world. Shows have included a full season from The Royal Opera House in Convent Garden, Andre Rieu Concerts from The Netherlands, Monty Python from the O2, and the National Theatre in London.

The owners of White River Cinema are a local family company ‘WTW Cinemas’ (abbreviation of W.T.Williams) who have operated three cinemas in St Austell for almost 70 years. The cinemas are: The Capitol Theatre in Alexandra Road (Theatre, Cinema, Ballroom, Cafe & Shops) from 1945-1986, The Filmcentre in Chandos Place (formerly Odeon/Classic) from 1978 (1 Screen), 1981 (3 Screens) and 1991 – 2007 (5 Screens). White River Cinema (4 screens) opened in December 2008 until the present day.

White River Cinema was named the RAAM UK Independent Cinema Of The Year at an awards ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel in February 2011.

The Richard Curtis film ‘About Time’ which was filmed in the St Austell Bay area, and held its UK Cinema Premiere in September 2013 in front of a capacity audience, and included an introduction by Richard Curtis himself.

In 2016 the locally filmed hit BBC series Poldark, held its second season premiere at the White River Cinema. Hundreds of fans lined the red carpet to get a glipse of stars Aidan Turner, Eleanor Tomlinson & Jack Farthing before the screening and cast interview.
